Shooting Schedule

Storyboard

For experience, I decided that I would plan a story board from another music video for practice. I only decided to do a 30 second slot as I thought it was pointless to do the whole of the music video. I have chosen one of my favorite tracks by the Arctic Monkeys, ‘Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?'. I have chosen to start my story board analysis at 1:53 in the video.

After research on story boarding and deciding on our narrative we then went onto planning our story board. We declared that we wasn't going to write up every shot of our music video as we found that we would end up changing our mind when we are at the location with our actors. Instead we have decided as shown below to only do our main important shots within the video.

From when we did our storyboard we have decided to change the first shot which is in fact going to be an establishing shot of where the practicing shed is which is location 1. We have done this to establish the first location for our audience and help them recognize the urban feel of our video. With the beginning of our video we have declared we also going to do a shot of when the first performer gets dropped off in the car. We then decided that we are going to do numerous shots within this opening shots whilst the performer walks to the shed, we think this will look good as it will build up tension toward there actual practice within the shed. We also have planned we want to do shots of them tuning there guitars etc and having a laugh as they're a stereotypical young boy band. Within this location we have talked about having bottles and cans of beer on the floor with also involving the performers smoking which helps with there mise-en scene. Also within our storyboard as we only was brief it doesn't explain much abotu our different locations. For instance we have decided that instead of using a roof top because we didn't get permission we have decided to film in a field of the band performing also as we fin that it will link well in with our third location which is at Attenborough Nature Reserve which is where we will be filming parts of the female role.
Below are all 5 of our storyboards we have drew up:

Mock up of Digipack & Magazine Advert

Mock up of Digipak:

Digipaks are special items made from paper board, and consist of a gatefold binding incorporating one or more plastic tray in which CDs can be held. The 'Digipak' is most often used for releases such as singles or special editions of albums. Digipaks can either consist of 4-panel units or 6-panels, 6-panels are more common with the special edition album market allowing the artist to include special features such as booklets, exclusive photos, or even small posters exclusive to the album. Above is an example of a template of a 6 panel Digipak, this will be the template which I will be following whilst producing my mock up.

Below is the track list to the album 'AM'. This will be shown on the back of my digipak:

01 Do I wanna know?
02 R U Mine?

03 One for the Road
04 Arabella
05 I Want It All
06 No. 1 Party Anthem
07 Mad Sounds
08 Fireside
09 Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?
10 Snap Out Of It
11 Knee Socks
12 I Wanna Be Yours

Above is my mock up for my digipak idea. I've decided that the colour scheme for my design will be black and white although as I’ve planned to have a faded silhouette of Sheffield city buildings I find that a faded blue would look well with black and white. I've decided to have this on-going theme throughout to show their roots as they're a Sheffield band. The front cover I have design a basic but eye-catching design, the logo of the album is the main focus with the 'AM' below. Although the obvious reasons why the album is named 'AM' which is short for 'Arctic Monkeys' I have also suggested it may have been called it as it's the time for the morning and as they are a rebellious band they may be hinting towards them being out drinking in the early hours of the morning. My CD on the other hand design will have an alarm clock linking to them still up in the early hours of the morning and have decided to put '2003' as the time to be quite ironic as the band formed in 2003. Moving onto the track list I have intended to involve a vinyl type of feel to it, as they’re an indie band I find the vinyl affect fits in  to they’re genre well. On this I have decided to involve the barcode and the record label they are signed too which is in fact ‘Domino Records’. On one of the side of the digipak I have intended to involve images of the band within a Polaroid picture design, in these images I want to involve the bond between the members of the band showing their relationships with one and other. Within this side of the digipak it will involve a short paragraph revolving around the band itself to give the audience a sense of relationship with the band, this could be another selling point of a digipak as fans of the band want to get to know there band more so they would purchase it. On the opposite side which is unfortunately faded and not visible in my image above I have designed to have text saying ‘Arctic Monkeys’ in the same exact font which is well known for the band, and within the bold text will involve the well-known ‘AM’ logo and for the background again will involve the faded landscape silhouette. On the final panel it will involve a different feel to the band as the images wont in fact involve an in depth image of the band but on the other hand involve a silhouette of the three members of the band against the faded blue silhouette background image but within this image it will be mirrored so that on the bottom of the panel it will be a furthermore faded effect of the faded city scene of Sheffield. Overall I’m pretty convinced this is the plan for my digipak although I have declared that when I start to actually produce my digipak if the colours don’t in fact go as well as I have thought I will have to change aspects of my design but at the moment I’m pretty clear and confident that my work is up to the standards I have wanted it to be.

After this I then went onto start mocking up my designs over a computer based system so I was able to see if my designs went together and if my planned layout and colours went together. First of all I thought that it would be important if I created a font for my artists name (‘ARCTIC MOKNEYS’) to be written in. I then went onto draw up my planned mock up on Microsoft Word. From that I had realised that I had created problems and mistakes, one of which was that I hadn’t included a  spine for my digipak, also I had realised I have in fact done my layout wrong and put my ‘CD’in the wrong place which I will have to change. I’m fairly happy that my above design will work out and be successful with the theme of the design being a silhouette of Sheffield city in a light blue with other colours being black and white. Which is not shown in the design but I am planning to do is on the front cover include images of the band but I still have this to plan as I want to edit them over Photoshop. My design is shown below:
Below is the chosen for for my Digipak and Magazine advert which my artists name will be written in:

Mock up of Magazine Advert:

Magazine adverts are used by artists and band as a way of broadcasting themselves to an interested audience. The magazine adverts that bands and artists use are mainly in music magazines, as this audience is already interested in music and in some cases that type of music dependant on whether it’s a genre related magazine. Some examples of music magazines include: NME, Q, Rolling Stone, Mojo and Top Of The Pops, genre related music magazines include: Kerrang which is rock genre related, Vibe which is Urban and Hip Hop style music, Music which is a classical based genre magazine and Billboard which is a pop music based magazine. There are so many different magazines as they all have different intents and audiences they aim at. From research I have realised that on every magazine advert there are many conventions which are used throughout each advert, these involve, Reviews/feedback, Picture of the band itself or the album/single which is being released, where you can actually purchase the album/single, the album title which is being advertised and the bands or artists name.

In previous magazine adverts of the Monkeys they have accordingly been known to be bold and vivid in it's colour scene. One example of this is in the image below which is an advertisement of their album 'Humbug' being released.

In this advert the background is orange, and is fading from top to bottom. This is met by the colours of the words used on the ad, as 'Humbug', is most clear in colour, whilst '24 August 2009' is faded and is closer matched to the colour of the background, due to the fade effect.
The middle of the ad shows a band logo, possibly used exclusively for this album, and has the band name stenciled into the middle. The logo appears to be 2 faces, back to back, joined by what could be their hair, or a representation of collaborative minds in relation to creating the album.

Another example of the Monkeys magazine adverts is below:

Below is my design for my magazine advert which I have completed towards my music video. The colour scheme for my magazine advert will be similar to my digipak of the black white and light blue theme. Linking towards my digipak I have decided to keep the same theme about involving the silhouette of the buildings of Sheffield city as I have found from my research that a link within products and advertisements with an album is a good advertisement point for the audiences to follow. With this I have decided to once again do a mirror effect of the background and lighten the below mirrored image so that the writing is clear and more visible to see. Starting from the top of my advert I have involved a quote from an online website quoting ‘AM paint music scenery on their fifth album’ this also links well with the whole silhouette feel as it’s scenery. On the right hand side is the actual name of the album which is being advertised which is seen to be in an alarm clock linking once again to the digipak as on the CD itself is an alarm clock. Below that on top of the faded scenery image would be a silhouette idea of the band either sitting on a curb or walking with their guitars on their backs and drums sticks being held by Freddie who is the drummer in our music video. Below that the record label who Arctic Monkeys are signed too which is yet again on my digipak and on the right to that is the date which the album was released ‘September 2013’ and on the right on that is a reviews of well-known Indie Rock magazines giving them a ranking of stars which is a great selling point for the band as people trust magazines which they’re familiar too.

I have also decided to include an image of the album it self including the CD and the album cover. I find this will work well as it's adding to the advertisement. I have also tried to alter the fact that having silhouettes as the main image and not an actually photograph, I have decided to change this because I have had a look at the mark scheme and realized that you get the most marks from your photography and because I take photography at A2 Level I want to show this throughout my work.

I then thought I would then draw up my mock idea on word to see if the layout would work and look good. I have made numerous of changes from my first mock-up of my magazine advert, one of which is that I’m not sticking to the idea of involving silhouettes simply because I’ve had a look at the mark scheme and decided because I take Photography as one of my A level I should use my Photoshop skills and produce a much more photogenic piece of work showing off my photography skills. Instead I have decided to include a main image of the band but I have cam up with the idea of taking an individual photo of each of the lads in the band then blending them together. Also I have included the tracks off the new album as I am advertising and trying to sell the album itself. Moving from the digipak I have concluded to keep the on-going theme of having the buildings art through my magazine advert also as I makes a nice link between the album itself and the advertisement, my magazine mock up is shown below:
